Bryant accuser's photo published

The Globe supermarket tabloid published a photo of a woman it says is the accuser in the sexual assault case against the Lakers' Kobe Bryant.

The cover photograph has a black strip over the woman's eyes in editions that came out Friday afternoon.

The woman's name has been on the radio in at least 60 cities and posted on various Internet sites, complete with address, phone number and, in several cases, photographs of the wrong women.

Meanwhile, news cameras will be allowed inside the Eagle, Colo., courtroom at Bryant's hearing Aug.6. And a live audio feed will be permitted, Eagle County Court Judge Fred Gannett said. He placed no restrictions on what the cameras could record. Gannett's order allows one pool TV camera and one pool still photographer.

And the Denver Post reported that the FBI is investigating threats being made against the Eagle County district attorney's office, where intimidation has become so bad the office door was locked for the first time Friday and visitors had to identify themselves before being admitted.

Krista Flannigan, the office's spokeswoman, said the threats targeted everyone from District Attorney Mark Hurlbert to staffers.

In Boca Raton, Globe editor Candace Trunzo defended the use of the photo and the two-page profile of the woman.

"The accusations of sexual assault against Kobe Bryant is a newsworthy matter of tremendous public interest," Trunzo said in a statement. "The Globe is a national news tabloid." The tabloid did not give the woman's name.

Almost all U.S. newspapers and news organizations, including the St. Petersburg Times, have policies against releasing the identities of sexual assault victims and have not named Bryant's accuser.

Bryant was charged with felony sexual assault after the 19-year-old woman said he attacked her at an Edwards, Colo., resort June30.

MAGIC SIGNINGS: Second-round draft picks Zaza Pachulia and Keith Bogans signed. Pachulia, a 6-foot-11 center, was drafted 42nd overall and Bogans, a 6-5 guard, was picked next. Pachulia, 19, said recently he turned down $1.5-million in Turkey to play for Orlando. He had played for Ulker of Istanbul since he was 15. In 21 games last season, he averaged 9.5 points and 5.5 rebounds. Bogans played four seasons at Kentucky, averaging 14.2 points and 4.1 rebounds.

JAMES IN CHARITY GAME: LeBron James, the first pick in last month's draft by the Cavaliers, will play in Magic Johnson's 18th annual charity game Sunday in Los Angeles. James played four summer-league games, averaging 15.8 points and 7.3 rebounds against mostly young, inexperienced players.

OLYMPIC TEAM: Toronto's Vince Carter will replace Kobe Bryant on the Olympic qualifying team, the Associated Press reported. Bryant withdrew Thursday because of shoulder and knee surgery. Bryant plans to play for the U.S. team at the 2004 Olympics if it qualifies at the Tournament of the Americas Aug.20-31 in Puerto Rico.

YAO INJURY: Houston's Yao Ming cut his eyebrow after colliding with a player and is expected to miss several games against a team of NBA stars visiting China. China's basketball association denied reports that the 7-6 center broke a bone during practice with his country's national team.

STOUDAMIRE CASE: Portland's Damon Stoudamire pleaded innocent to drug charges in Tucson, Ariz. A pretrial conference was set for Aug.28. He was arrested July3 at Tucson International Airport and cited for possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

CELTICS: Free-agent guard Mike James, who averaged 7.8 points with the Heat last season, signed a one-year deal for the two-year veteran minimum of $639,000.
