NEW YORK - St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols was suspended for two games and fined by Major League Baseball for fighting after being hit by a pitch against San Diego.
Padres catcher Gary Bennett and manager Bruce Bochy were fined for their roles in the bench clearings July 13.
In the first inning, Pujols was hit in the shoulder blade on Adam Eaton's first pitch.
Eaton was immediately ejected, and Pujols, Bennett and Bochy also were kicked out. Pujols punched Bennett in the face.
Pujols appealed his suspension, allowing him to play Friday night against Pittsburgh.
Bennett was fined for acting aggressively toward Pujols, and Bochy was penalized for what he said to umpire Mark Carlson.
CANSECO UPDATE: Jose Canseco was denied bond and will stay in jail in Miami until next month's trial on charges of violating his probation by using steroids.
The former major-league slugger's attorneys argued it was unclear whether Canseco took steroids during his probation. They also asked that he be released on house arrest so he could reconcile with his ex-wife and spend time with his 6-year-old daughter.
But Judge Leonard Glick said nothing had changed since he initially denied bond and that Canseco's family circumstances held no bearing.
"We see people here every day that have similar circumstances, perhaps more tragic circumstances," he said.
Canseco's ex-wife, Jessica, cried during the hearing. When the prosecutor said her ex-husband used steroids during his house arrest, she called him a "liar" from her seat and was warned by Glick to remain silent.
Canseco, 39, denies taking drugs while on probation. He could face 15 years in state prison if the judge rules against him.
