BARCELONA, Spain - Ian Crocker looked at the clock and thought there was a big mistake.

No mistake.

Crocker, not U.S. teammate Michael Phelps, set a world record Saturday in the 100-meter butterfly final at the World Swimming Championships.

When a startled Crocker saw his time, he shouted "What?" and gave a shrug of disbelief, then embraced Phelps across the lane ropes.

"A lot of people would say I had full confidence in myself going into the race," Crocker said. "But deep down you've got to say: "Hey, it's Michael Phelps.' "

Phelps had broken four world records, including the 100 butterfly on Friday.

Crocker won in 50.98 seconds and Phelps was second in 51.10 - the two fastest times in history.

In other events, triple Olympic champion Inge De Bruijn won the 50 butterfly, her first gold of the championships. De Bruijn clocked 25.84, beating eight-time Olympic champion Jenny Thompson of the United States (26.00). In the 50 freestyle final, world-record holder and Olympic gold medalist Alexander Popov won his third gold of the championships in 21.92.

SOCCER: U.S. finishes third at Gold Cup

Bobby Convey and Earnie Stewart scored second-half goals within a 10-minute span as the United States rallied to defeat Costa Rica 3-2 in the third-place CONCACAF Gold Cup match in Miami.

U-17 NATIONAL TEAM: Bradenton's Freddy Adu and MLS rookies Guillermo Gonzalez and Eddie Gaven were among 20 players selected by coach John Ellinger. The 14-year-old Adu has eight goals and six assists in 12 career international matches.

MLS: Evan Whitfield and Justin Mapp scored as host Chicago beat Kansas City 2-0.

WUSA: Abby Wambach scored her sixth goal in six games, and Mia Hamm had a goal and an assist as host Washington beat San Diego 2-0. ... Venus James scored twice and Birgit Prinz once to lead Carolina to a 3-1 win over host Philadelphia. ... Charmaine Hooper scored for Atlanta as it tied host New York at 1.

TENNIS: Roddick advances in one hour

Andy Roddick needed an hour to beat third-seeded Sjeng Schalken 6-3, 6-2 and reach the final of the RCA Championships in Indianapolis. The top-seeded Roddick faces No.2 Paradorn Srichaphan, who eliminated unseeded Nicolas Thomann 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC: Jennifer Capriati, who hasn't won a title in 18 months, advanced to her second WTA final of the season, defeated qualifier Maria Vento-Kabchi 6-4, 6-4 in Stanford, Calif.

ET CETERA

BOXING: Fernando Vargas dominated Fitz Vanderpool before their junior lightweight bout was stopped at 2:36 of the sixth round. Vargas led 50-45, 50-45 and 50-44 on the judges' scorecards.

HORSES: Lady Tak ran the fastest race in the 78-year history of the Test Stakes, pulling away from Bird Town for a 41/2-length victory at Saratoga. The time of 1:204/5 bettered the record of 1:21 set by Go For Wand in 1990 and tied by Capote Belle in 1996. ... Alamshar won the $1.2-million King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Ascot, England, beating Sulamani by 31/2 lengths.

NHL: Atlanta re-signed forward Vyacheslav Kozlov. Terms were not disclosed, but general manager Don Waddell said the deal was approved by AOL-Time Warner, the current owner, and David McDavid, in negotiations to buy the team.
