Commission News

The Hernando County Commission met Tuesday and took the following actions:

Voted to send Pasco County officials a summary of concerns regarding a proposed waste processing facility to be located at U.S. 41 and Fontaine Avenue, a quarter-mile south of the Hernando-Pasco county line. Hernando planners say the industrial character of the project does not fit well with surrounding land uses and appears inconsistent with the Pasco County comprehensive plan. Also, planners say too little is known about how the project might affect air quality if tires are burned, as proposed. The Pasco County Planning Commission is to hear the matter on Aug. 13, the Pasco County Commission on Aug. 26.

Approved rules changes meant to clarify the role of the county's Citizens Ordinance Advisory Team. The group, formed more than a year ago to make recommendations on code enforcement issues, has often found itself at the center of hotly contested issues - deciding the appropriate place for garage sale signs and whether inoperable cars should be allowed in yards, for example. Under the new rules, a liaison from the County Commission will be the chairperson for the nine-member group, rather than the code enforcement director. Meeting agendas will be set by the County Commission and the code enforcement staff. To use county resources to explore issues other than those put on team's agendas, the group will have to seek County Commission approval.
