Hot tips for cold callers

By Times Staff Writer
Published August 4, 2003

The telemarketing industry isn't just giving up in the face of the new federal "do-not-call" registry.

Case in point: For a mere $199, Tampa Bay area telemarketers can attend "Cold Calling for Cowards" at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel on Aug. 22.

In addition to the best techniques for "scriptease," the sponsor, Slife Sales Training Inc. of Wenatchee, Wash., promises on its Web site (www.salestrainingcamp.com) that attendees will learn to:

- Sell the three things customers buy before they will even look at your product or service.

- Be 50 percent more effective on the phone by being a "dork."

- Use the "Fonz" technique to deal with rejection.

An ad for one of its seminars taught by telephone, "Warming Up Cold Calls," asserts that "Most salespeople would rather stand under a cold shower, fully dressed, tearing up $100 bills than make cold calls."

It didn't comment on what most recipients of cold calls would rather do.
