SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Laura Wilkinson, the reigning Olympic champion in 10-meter platform diving, placed fifth in Wednesday's final at the Pan American Games.
Two weeks after winning the world championship, Canadian Emilie Heymans scored 568.44 points to win. Juliana Veloso of Brazil earned silver with 503.85, and Blythe Hartley of Canada scored 474.81 for bronze.
Lauryn Williams won the 100 meters in a personal-best 11.12 seconds, and Mickey Grimes won the men's 100. It marked the first time the United States swept the 100 in the Pan Ams since 1987.
American Stephen Moore made up more than 68 points by winning the 1,500 in the final event of the decathlon, beating Luiggy Llanos of Puerto Rico 7,809-7,704.
And the U.S. women routed the Dominican Republic 109-54 in basketball to finish the round robin 4-1.
SWIMMING: World champ wins again
Michael Phelps won two titles at the U.S. championships in College Park, Md. He missed a world record by less than a second while winning the 200 backstroke in 1:56.10. And he came from behind to win the 100 freestyle in 49.19. Phelps, 18, competed for the first time since he won four gold medals and set five world records at last month's world championships.
NHL: Bruin continues recovery
Bruins defenseman Jonathan Girard might leave a Montreal hospital in a week after he was seriously injured in a car crash July 24. His agent, Bob Sauve, said it would be 2-3 months before Girard would be on his feet, and there's no timetable for his return to the ice.
DUCKS: Defenseman Nichlas Havelid agreed to a three-year deal. He set career highs last season with 11 goals and 22 assists.
SABRES: Buffalo forward Thomas Vanek, the No. 5 overall pick in June, will spend at least another season at the University of Minnesota, allowing him more time to develop before signing.
TENNIS: Agassi wins; Hewitt falls
Andre Agassi beat Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 to reach the third round of the Canada Masters in Montreal. He next faces Simon Larose, who beat Jose Acususo 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-5. Also, former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt was upset 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5 by Max Mirnyi. Hewitt has lost four of his past nine matches, including in the first round of Wimbledon.
JPMORGAN CHASE OPEN: Kim Clijsters beat Emilie Lott 6-1, 6-1 in the second round in Carson, Calif. Clijsters could move to No. 1 in the world if she wins the event.
SOCCER: Dallas upset in U.S. Cup
Glenn Murray's two second-half goals led host Wilmington of the USL Pro Select League to a 4-1 upset of Dallas to reach the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, which is open to all pro and amateur teams in the United States.
