Daily fishing report

MIKE WHITMAN
Published August 7, 2003

On a recent trip we fished a spring southwest of Pass-a-Grille about 60 miles in 170 feet of water. The first two baits down produced 40-pound amberjack and ensuing hits snagged a pair of 75-pounders. In addition, we boated red grouper and a 12-pound mutton snapper.

There are decent weed patches in 140 feet of water holding dolphin. Shrimp boats have plenty of bonito and black tips and the occasional cobia. Red Tide seems to be everywhere. We are seeing dead fish from the Structure C bridge in Boca Ciega Bay to 10 miles off the beach. We have been using our wash-down hose as a sprayer over the top of our bait well to help aerate the bait until we get into blue water.
