Poison thrives in many yards

Following are some of the common plants that are poisonous to people, cats or dogs. A more complete list, including plants toxic to other animals, is available at www.ansci.cornell.edu/plants

Azaleas and rhododendrons (Rhododendron species): All parts of the plants, especially leaves, are toxic to all animals.

Bleeding heart, Dutchman's breeches, squirrel corn (Dicentra species): All parts are toxic to cats and humans.

Buckeye, horse chestnut (Aesculus species): The fruit is toxic to humans.

Cabbage, broccoli, rape, mustard (Brassica species): The roots and seeds are toxic to humans.

Castor bean (Ricinus communis): The seeds are toxic to all humans and animals.

Common vetch, hairy vetch, narrow-leaved vetch, purple vetch (Vicia species): The seeds are toxic to humans.

Delphinium, larkspur (Delphinium species): All parts are toxic to humans.

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea): The flowers, leaves and seeds are toxic to cats, dogs and humans.

Irises (Iris species): The rhizomes and rootstocks are toxic to humans.

Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisaema species): All parts are toxic to humans.

Lantana (Lantana camara): Unripe green berries are toxic to dogs, cats and humans.

Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis): All parts of the plant are toxic to cats, dogs and humans.

Monkshood (Aconitum species): All parts are toxic to humans.

Poppies (Papaver species): All parts of some poppies are toxic to humans.

Rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum): The leaves are toxic to humans.

Sweet pea (Lathyrus species): The seeds are toxic to humans.

Wisteria (Wisteria species): All parts are toxic to humans.

Yew (Taxus cuspidata): The leaves, seeds and twigs are toxic to all humans and animals.
