Those with young children that show an inkling of an interest in music might want check out what's going on in music programs at the middle and high school level.
While after-school band instruction is offered at some elementary schools, another way to expose youngsters to this talent is to bring them to other youth performances.
The bands are out at sporting events, parades and various community events. Many high schools host a free night for elementary schools at one of their weekly football games, creating a good venue for sport and music enthusiasts alike.
There are winter and spring concerts, which are usually free and are often listed in the Classnotes section of Top of the Class.
All-county symphonic and jazz concerts are being planned. Then there are marching band evaluations (Nov. 8 at River Ridge High School), which feature marching bands from Pasco as well as neighboring counties.
So while you're checking out the news at your own school, give your youngsters something to aspire to and plan to attend some of these special events.
