ST. LEO - Saint Leo University will get a price break from St. Leo, the town.
Town commissioners on Monday agreed to slash the $1,000-per-unit transportation impact fee for new construction on the new dorms that are just weeks away from opening on the university campus.
School officials had complained the fees would add $58,000 to the cost of the 58-unit housing development. Attorney Robert Williams, representing the university, said a study shows student housing is less of an impact on roads than a single-family home.
Students are at school only part of the year, and they don't run multiple trips around town. Instead, they are usually traveling directly from school to someplace out of town, he said.
Commissioners agreed to cut the fee for the dorm to $450 per residential unit, a discount of $31,900. Commissioners agreed to revisit the issue and determine a set fee, by ordinance, for all additional dormitory housing.
As part of university growth, the school plans to add up to four more dormitories in coming years.
