Clearwater corners market on awards

By BOB PUTNAM
Published August 15, 2003

Clearwater no longer leads the Western Division, but it is ahead of other teams in awards.

Outfielder Juan Camillo was named Florida State League player of the week for Aug. 4-11 after hitting .524 with a home run, a double and a triple in six games. He also scored six runs and drove in seven.

Infielder Sean Walsh was named the Phillies organization's minor-league player of the month for July. Walsh, who has played five positions, hit safely in 25 of 30 games and hit .323 with 10 doubles, a triple and four home runs.

ATHLETE UPDATE: Dustin McGowan, the Blue Jays' top prospect according to Baseball America, has not lost since being promoted from Dunedin to Double-A New Haven in June.

The right-hander, who was the team's first-round pick in the 2000 amateur draft, improved to 6-0 after pitching 7 2/3 innings against Norwich on Monday. He has allowed two runs or fewer in his past six starts. He also has struck out 38 and walked 12 in the past 43 2/3 innings.

McGowan's teammate, Dave Bush, also has been impressive.

The right-hander, who also was promoted from Dunedin in June, is 6-1 with 51 strikeouts in 59 innings. The former closer from Wake Forest was selected in the second round last year and was converted to a starter this spring.

DUNEDIN: One of the reasons Dunedin is in first place in the Western Divison is the performance of right-handers Chuck Kegley and Neomar Flores.

Kegley was 3-0 and did not allow a run in nine consecutive games (July 9-Aug. 6). Flores was 5-0 with a 2.41 ERA in seven games (July 3-August 1).

CLEARWATER: The accolades keep coming for left-hander Cole Hamels.

Hamels, the Phillies' first-round pick last year who started the season at Class-A Lakewood, had the best breaking ball in the South Atlantic League, according to the best tools survey produced annually by Baseball America.

Hamels, who was promoted to Clearwater two weeks ago, used the pitch effectively in his debut. He struck out 10 and allowed three runs in 52/3 innings. It was the sixth time Hamels had 10 strikeouts or more this season.

For that performance, Baseball America also ranked Hamels as the top prospect in the minor leagues last week.

TAMPA: After throwing six scoreless innings on Aug. 6, left-hander Sean Henn appeared to be recovering from a sore shoulder. But he lasted just 12/3 innings in his last outing and threw strikes on 16 of 34 pitches.

This is the second time Henn has tried to come back from an injury in the past two seasons. He missed last season after Tommy John surgery.
