Dorsey leads 49ers to late winning TD

SAN FRANCISCO - Ken Dorsey still knows how to win, even when it's only for bay area bragging rights.

Dorsey threw a 9-yard touchdown to fullback Matt Stanley with 2:19 left, giving the 49ers a 14-10 victory over Oakland in the Battle of the Bay preseason game Thursday. Rick Mirer led the Raiders to the 49ers 9 in the final minute, but the veteran quarterback fumbled a fourth-down snap with 26 seconds left.

Dorsey, who led the University of Miami to 38 victories and a national title, had another strong game in his fight to make the 49ers' roster. The seventh-round draft choice was 6-of-15 for 47 yards, but he made important throws during a 71-yard drive. Stanley nearly dropped the soft pass but recovered and dove across the goal line.

After missing his first four kicks of the preseason, Sebastian Janikowski kicked a 45-yard field goal for the Raiders.

DEIDRA LANE PLEADS GUILTY: Sobbing and apologizing to the family of running back Fred Lane, Deidra Lane pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for gunning down her husband July 6, 2000, as he walked through the front door of their home.

Deidra Lane, 28, faces up to 19 years in prison, but prosecutors said she likely will get about 10.

"I would like to apologize to the Lane family," she said in tears at the hearing. "I'm sorry for the loss and the pain this has caused."

Her 24-year-old husband, a Carolina Panther who recently had been traded to Indianapolis, was shot to death as he came home after visiting his family in Tennessee. Police found Fred Lane's body just inside the front door of his house. His packed bag lay nearby, and his keys were in the door lock.

Deidra Lane originally was charged with first-degree murder, and a brief statement issued jointly by prosecutors and Lane's defense team didn't explain why the charge was downgraded.

Mecklenburg County assistant district attorney Glenn Cole refused to explain, though he said a plea bargain had been discussed by attorneys for months.

Deidra Lane pleaded guilty last year to an unrelated federal charge of conspiracy to commit bank larceny, and was sentenced to four months in jail.

BROWNS: Defensive lineman Courtney Brown will skip tonight's preseason game against the Packers as he works back from offseason knee surgery.

CHARGERS: Pro Bowl running back LaDainian Tomlinson pulled himself out of practice because he was overheated and dehydrated. He was taken on a cart to the training room, received two bags of IV fluid and rested for several hours. It was 71 degrees with 71 percent humidity at the start of practice but was hotter by the time it ended, with no breeze.

COWBOYS: Former defensive back Dwayne Goodrich testified he crashed into a fiery accident scene, killing two people, because his view was blocked by a sport utility vehicle. Goodrich said he panicked and sped off. Goodrich, 25, is on trial in Dallas for two counts of manslaughter in the Jan. 14 hit-and-run deaths of Joby Wood, 21, and Demont Matthews, 23, who were helping free a motorist from a burning car. Prosecutors tried to discredit Goodrich's testimony, pointing out he had never mentioned an SUV blocking his view. Goodrich also said alcohol was not a factor in the pre-dawn accident and that he had not had anything to drink for three hours.

49ERS: Defensive tackle Bryant Young will miss two weeks after surgery to remove a bone spur from his left ankle. He should be ready for the Sept. 7 opener against the Bears.

GIANTS: Defensive end Michael Strahan will miss tonight's preseason game against the Panthers. He broke the little toe on his right foot last week.

REDSKINS: Punter David Leaverton, a 2001 pick by Jacksonville who has been with five teams but has not played a regular-season game, was signed.
