JACKSONVILLE - Byron Leftwich, making his NFL debut, threw a touchdown with 1:02 left to give the Jaguars a 27-23 win over the Dolphins.

Leftwich played the final nine minutes, completing 7-of-10 for 84 yards and driving the Jaguars 70 yards on 10 plays in 3:11 for the winning TD.

Miami's Jay Fiedler, who sat out the preseason opener against Tampa Bay because of back spasms, looked sharp in his debut. He finished 7-of-11 for 53 yards and a TD on three possessions.

"I felt physically great," he said. "Overall, I thought I played pretty well. I was comfortable out there and we put some points on the board."

PACKERS 38, BROWNS 31: Ahman Green rushed for 55 yards and scored on a 1-yard run for visiting Green Bay, which rallied behind TD runs from Herbert Goodman and Nick Luchey in the third quarter. Kelly Holcomb started for Cleveland, throwing two touchdowns in the first quarter before being replaced by Tim Couch, who completed his first four passes - the last a 20-yard TD to Kevin Johnson. Also, Packers left tackle Chad Clifton played in his first game since being injured when he was blindsided by Tampa Bay's Warren Sapp last season.

COWBOYS 34, TEXANS 6: Quincy Carter overcame a slow start to lead a 96-yard touchdown drive for host Dallas in the second quarter, then added a 30-yard TD 14 seconds later. Former Pasco High standout Troy Hambrick scored the first touchdown for the Cowboys, helping his bid to replace Emmitt Smith at running back. Hambrick, who had minus-1 yard on four carries against the Cardinals, finished with 38 yards on eight carries.

PANTHERS 20, GIANTS 10: Safety Mike Minter scored on 43-yard fumble return in a 13-point second quarter for Carolina. It was coach John Fox's first game at Giants Stadium since resigning as defensive coordinator to become Panthers coach. The Giants failed to get a first down in the second half with Jesse Palmer at quarterback. Outspoken tight end Jeremy Shockey left in the first half after bruising his ribs.

COLTS 21, SEAHAWKS 7: Playing in front of the smallest Indianapolis crowd (26,741), the defense forced five turnovers, had four sacks, scored one touchdown and set up another. Peyton Manning was 10-of-15 for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck was 3-of-9 for 25 yards, was sacked once and fumbled on the first series of the game. Seneca Wallace finished 10-of-18 for 84 yards with one interception and one fumble the Colts recovered for a touchdown. He was sacked three times.

HALL OF FAME: Tackle Bob Brown and wide receiver Bob Hayes are the seniors committee candidates for election in Canton, Ohio, for 2004. Brown played with Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Oakland from 1964-73 and Hayes, a track star from FAMU who won two Olympic gold medals in 1964, was a standout for Dallas (1965-74) and San Francisco (1975). Brown and Hayes will join 13 modern-era candidates on the list of finalists. The selection meeting will be held Jan.31.

GOODRICH TRIAL: Former Cowboys defensive back Dwayne Goodrich was convicted of criminally negligent homicide (a lesser charge) in the deaths of two men in a hit-and-run accident. He had been on trial for manslaughter. The sentencing hearing begins Monday in Dallas. Goodrich was convicted in the Jan.14 deaths of two Plano, Texas, men - "Joby" Wood, 21, and Demont Matthews, 23 - who had stopped along the highway to free a motorist from a burning car. Goodrich faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine on each conviction.

EAGLES: Wide receiver Todd Pinkston signed a six-year extension through 2008. Pinkston led the Eagles with 60 receptions for 798 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

JETS: Guard Tom Nutten told coach Herman Edwards that he is retiring. Nutten, who signed as a free agent in the offseason to replace Randy Thomas, was competing for the starting job but apparently lost out to Brent Smith. Nutten, 32, played six seasons with Buffalo and St. Louis, where he won a Super Bowl ring.
