COCONUT CREEK - Identical twin brothers have been charged as adults with raping an 11-year-old girl several times over the course of nearly a year.
Aaron and Gonzalo Chavez, 17, could face life in prison if convicted.
The twins, who were 15 and 16 when the crimes allegedly occurred, were arrested July 23.
Prosecutors charged them as adults three weeks later. The brothers face counts of sexual battery on a victim younger than 12 and promoting sexual activity on a victim younger than 16.
Police spokeswoman Judie Banks said the alleged violations of the girl continued until her mother found out and called police. Police say both boys have made incriminating statements on tape.
The boys' family contends that the girl and a friend concocted the accusations and that the boys were interrogated with neither their parents nor attorneys present.
