Elementary improves FCAT grade on appeal

YBOR CITY - Philip Shore Elementary joined 21 schools across the South Tampa area that earned FCAT A's when their recent appeal to the Department of Education was granted.

Shore was among four Hillsborough County schools that improved their grade. Eight others, including Robinson High School, were denied appeals. Robinson's grade remains a D.

Shore principal Hal Nelson said the original B grade was the result of a clerical error. One child's grades were accidentally included in the bottom quartile.

Shore, a magnet school for the arts at 1908 Second Ave. in Ybor City, also earned a passing score on the federal No Child Left Behind.

Schools' FCAT scores are based on the reading and math scores of their students. Schools with high grades have students that are performing at or above their grade level.

Statewide, 31 of 112 schools seeking improved grades succeeded.
