TALLAHASSEE - Kathleen Shanahan, chief of staff for Gov. Jeb Bush, will be leaving her job and the state this fall.
Shanahan wouldn't discuss her plans when asked Thursday. Her departure will be announced next week.
She was chief of staff for Vice President Dick Cheney during the 2000 election and joined the governor's staff shortly after his brother, President Bush, was inaugurated in 2001. She has close ties to the Bush family and worked for former President Bush when he was vice president in the 1980s.
She replaced Sally Bradshaw, a longtime adviser to the governor and the only other person to serve as Bush's chief of staff since he was elected governor in 1998.
Shanahan's departure is not unexpected. She has long indicated she would return to New York, California or Washington after spending time in Tallahassee.
She was born in Oxnard, Calif., and raised in Ventura, Calif.
