Many spiny lobsters have been reported lately, which is uncommon for the Gulf of Mexico. They are found under low ledges and rock piles and in potholes and average 5 pounds. Lobsters can get quite large, such as Rich Taylor's recent 11.2-pounder.
Divers are finding a variety of water temperatures and visibilities. In 60 feet it's 86 degrees with 25 feet visibility; in 130 feet you'll need a wet suit at 72 degrees and 50 feet visibility; and at 170 feet it's a cold 62 degrees but crystal clear.
Deep wrecks and springs are holding schools of small amberjack, with occasional rogues up to 90 pounds. Cobia also can frequent these deep sites or can be found on the bottom near shallow artificial reefs.
The shrimp boat that burned and sank in 100 feet of water off Tampa Bay on July 30 has been checked by divers and found to have many mangrove snappers seeking refuge from the new resident, goliath grouper.
The St. Pete Open on Saturday set a world record for entrants in a spearfishing tournament at 319 divers, with 18 women and 12 under 17 years old.
