Stabbing suspect charged in attack

TAMPA - The man accused of stabbing a third-grade teacher outside a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop on Wednesday is facing new charges.

Hillsborough sheriff's deputies say Matthew Fowler also is responsible for another attack on Aug. 17 in which he tried to rob a woman outside a bar on Fletcher Avenue.

Fowler, 39, approached 33-year-old Alethea Hearin about 12:45 a.m. outside the Brass Mug, 1441 E Fletcher Ave., and demanded money, said sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter.

"When she refused, he attempted to slash her with an unknown-type knife," Carter said.

Hearin suffered a small wound to her left palm, and Fowler fled on foot, Carter said.

Three days later, authorities say, Fowler stabbed 54-year-old Brenda Hill of Lutz with an 8-inch butcher knife in the parking lot of the Krispy Kreme doughnut shop at 8425 N Florida Ave.

That attack took place about 3:40 p.m. Investigators said Hill offered Fowler her purse and her black Volvo sport-utility vehicle, but she refused to get into the car and drive Fowler where he wanted to go.

He stabbed her once in the abdomen and once in the thigh, reports said.

Hill was in fair condition late Monday at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Fowler had been released on July 28 after serving almost 15 years in prison for attempted murder, resisting an officer with violence, robbery with a deadly weapon and escape.

Records show he also has served prison sentences from October 1980 to September 1981 and from January 1982 to December 1987. Since age 16, he has been out of prison no longer than nine months at a time.

Shortly after the attack at Krispy Kreme, Fowler was arrested on charges of attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and kidnapping.

Officials said Hearin identified him as her attacker by picking him out of a photo lineup. He now faces additional charges of attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery.

He remained in custody at the Hillsborough County Jail on Monday without bail.
