Afternoon thunderstorms do provide natural air conditioning but also create danger for anglers. Lightning can happen miles from storm centers and should be taken seriously, and wind can kick up the seas quickly.
An early start will help you avoid late showers. The storms' predictability often causes complacency and a lack of respect. Any storm can be a source of horror stories. It is not uncommon for rod tips to buzz like bumblebees. This situation is scary and an indication it is time to go home. Mangrove snapper continue to cooperate in Tampa Bay and do not mind the summer heat. Small greenbacks or shrimp are ideal bait for these tasty treats. Medium-action spinning equipment is preferred when fishing for mangs. They are scrappy fighters, and extremely light equipment will lead only to frustration. The new, braided types of line are perfect.
Snapper can be found anywhere where structure exists in the water. Docks, bridges, rock piles and artificial reefs are good spots to find summer snapper. Bring lots of bait, for they are good at stealing it without detection.
Redfish continue to be active in the northern parts of the bay. The last few hours before high tide seem to be the best for red action. Traditional redfish lures or live bait under a float will give excellent opportunities.
