MONTREAL - The Expos are hanging on in the wild-card race.
Livan Hernandez scattered eight hits in his league-leading seventh complete game and Vladimir Guerrero drove in four to lead Montreal over the Philadelphia Phillies 12-1 Monday night.
Hernandez struck out nine and walked one in his 30th career complete game. He improved to 4-0 in five August starts.
"The team's very excited about playing four games here against Philadelphia," Hernandez said. "Everybody tried to play the best they can, and the team came in today and hit a lot."
The Expos, who went 2-4 on a West Coast trip, drew within three of Philadelphia and Florida in the wild-card standings as they began a stretch of 13 games against those rivals.
"I think we stepped up to the challenge," second baseman Jose Vidro said. "We got here late (Sunday) night, and I guess it didn't affect us because we came out with a lot of energy. The guys were very excited to go out there. Before the game you could see the adrenaline going. That's what it's all about, these types of games and these types of situations."
The Phillies dropped to 1-6 on a season-high 13-game road trip.
"As bad as we're playing, as bad as we're going, we're tied for first in the wild card," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said.
Randy Wolf gave up nine runs and six hits in 12/3 innings, the shortest of 137 career starts.
"It's going to be a long four days," Wolf said, already looking ahead to his next outing.
In his previous start, he allowed seven runs over 41/3 innings of a 10-1 loss at Milwaukee.
"He's struggling right now," Bowa said. "No one feels worse than he does."
The game drew 30,501, Montreal's highest home attendance since May 24. The Expos offered $3.50 tickets and had a 70-cent hot dogs promotion.
D'BACKS 11, PADRES 8: Randy Johnson ended his first losing streak in four years as host Arizona gained ground in the crowded wild-card race.
Alex Cintron and Robby Hammock hit two-run homers for the Diamondbacks and Luis Gonzalez and Matt Kata drove in two each.
Arizona moved within 11/2 of wild-card leaders Philadelphia and Florida. Eight teams are within three games of the Phillies and Marlins.
BREWERS 10, REDS 6: Geoff Jenkins hit a two-run homer and Bill Hall homered and drove in three as visiting Milwaukee won seven straight games for the first time since joining the NL in 1998.
