Around the league

SENATORS: Biovail Corp. chairman and billionaire Eugene Melnyk was introduced as owner and chairman of the team and its arena, the Corel Centre.

Melnyk, 44, who made the purchase through one of his companies, Capital Sports Properties Inc., received court and league approval in June. The Senators didn't disclose financial details.

"I personally intend to contribute in a real and meaningful way towards making this franchise even better," Melnyk said in a statement.

"This is a splendid moment for the Senators franchise and its fans," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. "Today's announcement officially ensures an era of long-term stability for both the Senators and the Corel Centre."

Former owner Rod Bryden lost control of the team when it filed for creditor protection on Jan. 9. Bryden said he wouldn't bid again for the franchise after an offer he made in February failed.

STARS: Center Niko Kapanen, who led NHL rookies with 29 assists last season, signed a one-year contract.
