Get Away

Inside information

Things we like to do.

There's a hurricane inside a small glass room, far in the back of Tampa's Museum of Science and Industry. Every hour, the wind inside the box builds to 85 miles per hour, letting the 15 to 20 visitors who've stepped inside feel the force of the storm.

Your hair stands up and swirls and slaps into your goggle-covered face. You're pushed back into your seat. You may even feel a bit breathless.

And just when it starts to be too much, the wind dies.

There are newer, flashier attractions at MOSI, but this old favorite always feels like a thrill ride . . . especially if you remember that a real hurricane would last a lot longer than 2 minutes.
