Concussion KOs Cards' Blake

Published August 29, 2003

MINNEAPOLIS - Arizona quarterback Jeff Blake left Thursday night's preseason game with a mild concussion after being hit by Vikings tackle Chris Hovan.

On the first play from scrimmage, Hovan wrapped up Blake, who appeared to hit his head on the turf. The sack was negated by a penalty on Vikings cornerback Denard Walker.

There was no immediate word on whether Blake would miss Arizona's opener Sept.7 at Detroit.

Blake, who signed a three-year deal in March, has completed 21 of 39 this preseason for 196 yards and a touchdown.

Play stopped for several minutes in the second quarter when Cardinals strong safety Justin Lucas suffered a slightly sprained neck and a concussion. Lucas appeared to get hit by a teammate while trying to make a tackle. X-rays on Lucas' neck showed no major damage.

EAGLES: Rookie defensive end Jerome McDougle left the game against the Jets with a left hip and ankle injury. X-rays showed no major injury but he is scheduled for an MRI today.

JAGUARS: Two Jaguars and one former member of the team testified before a federal grand jury investigating alleged drug dealings by a Jacksonville businessman. Defensive tackles Marcus Stroud and John Henderson and cornerback Kiwaukee Thomas answered questions about Don Brown Jr., owner of an auto accessories shop that sold expensive wheel rims and audio and visual equipment. Stacey Mack, a former Jaguar who plays for the Texans, also testified. Brown is accused of using the business as a front for sales of cocaine and marijuana since 1997. Thomas and Stroud told the Florida Times-Union they bought rims and other accessories at Brown's business and promised to cooperate with investigators.

Also, tight end Kyle Brady signed to a three-year contract extension worth $9.3-million.

LIONS: Running back James Stewart separated his right shoulder in the first quarter of a preseason game at Buffalo. It was unknown how long he will be out. Stewart was hurt when he was hit at the line of scrimmage by safety Coy Wire and tackled from behind by three other defenders.

PATRIOTS: The team released six players, including Corbin Lacina, who started all 16 games at left guard last season for Minnesota. The others cut all played in NFL Europe: running back Frank Moreau, fullback Michael Malan, tight end Rod Trafford, defensive end Brad Harris and cornerback Dyshod Carter.

TEXANS: Tight end Bennie Joppru is recovering from hernia surgery in Philadelphia and is expected to return to Houston today. The team did not say how long the second-round draft pick from Michigan would be out. ... The team released receiver Avion Black and claimed offensive linemen Garrick Jones and Michael Keathley off waivers.

DeBerg pleads no contest

TAMPA - Former Bucs quarterback Steve DeBerg pleaded no contest to a count of driving under the influence. Hillsborough County Judge Elvin Martinez sentenced him to a year's probation, DUI school and 50 hours of community service.

Prosecutors were prepared to take DeBerg's case to trial Thursday when he entered the plea. A Tampa police officer pulled DeBerg over in July 2002 after spotting him driving erratically at the corner of Spruce Street and Westshore Boulevard.

Authorities said DeBerg did poorly on a field sobriety test, refused to take a breath test and urinated on himself while being taken into custody.
