BOSTON - Roger Clemens earned his 100th win at Fenway Park in his final regular-season start there as the Yankees beat Boston 8-4.
Boston threatened in the ninth, loading the bases against Jeff Nelson. But Mariano Rivera struck out Nomar Garciaparra, who went 0-for-5.
When Clemens left after walking Gabe Kapler to load the bases in the seventh, the capacity crowd gave him a standing ovation. It continued as he stood in the dugout, so he came out, waved and tipped his hat.
"It was very special," he said. "It gave me the opportunity to say thank you."
Clemens is 100-55 at Fenway, where he played for Boston from 1984-96. He plans to retire after the season and would pitch here again only in the playoffs.
In the fifth, Derek Jeter singled and went to second when centerfield Gabe Kapler bobbled the ball. Nick Johnson singled in Jeter. After a double play, Bernie Williams walked and scored when Hideki Matsui's fly to deep left-center hit off Kapler's glove for his second error and a 5-2 lead.
Catcher Doug Mirabelli's throwing error allowed two more runs to score in the seventh.
Ranger makes history in win
ARLINGTON, Texas - Alex Rodriguez became the second player with six consecutive 40-homer seasons, and Einar Diaz singled home the winning run in the ninth as the Rangers beat the Twins 11-10.
Making his first start at designated hitter since Aug. 4, 2001, Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the first. Babe Ruth holds the record at seven seasons from 1926-32. The Cubs' Sammy Sosa, with 31, could reach six in a row.
Laynce Nix led off the ninth with a single and went to second on Ramon Nivar's bunt. Nix reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Diaz's single over a drawn-in outfield.
MARINERS 3, ORIOLES 0: Jamie Moyer beat visiting Baltimore for the 14th consecutive time, the longest current streak by a pitcher against one team. The Orioles, who last beat Moyer on May 30, 1989, lost their season-worst eighth consecutive game for the second time in August. Seattle got two in the sixth on run-scoring singles by Carlos Guillen and John Olerud.
ANGELS 7, ROYALS 4: Scott Spiezio and Garret Anderson homered for Anaheim in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was postponed by rain in Kansas City. Spiezio's two-run homer in the third made it 4-0. Anderson's homer in the seventh made it 7-3.
WHITE SOX 6, TIGERS 1: Magglio Ordonez hit a tiebreaking single in the eighth and Esteban Loaiza became the AL's first 18-game winner. With the visiting White Sox down 1-0, Joe Crede tied it with a leadoff homer in the eighth. One out later, Roberto Alomar hit his third double of the game. Ordonez lined a two-out single to left to score Alomar.
INDIANS 5, BLUE JAYS 4: Errors by Kevin Cash and Frank Catalanotto allowed host Cleveland to score two in the ninth. Tim Laker led off with a single. Jhonny Peralta bunted, but Cash threw it into centerfield to put runners at second and third. Pinch-hitter Matt Lawton hit a grounder to first that Catalanotto threw past Cash, letting both runners score.
