SEMINOLE - The 7th annual "Music in the Park," a series of free concerts, begins Sept. 12 in Seminole City Park, 7464 Ridge Road.

The concerts will take place on six consecutive Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m., said Jim Sheets, Seminole recreation director.

Country musician Hank Shaw and his six-piece band Cactus Creek will open the series Sept. 12 with classic rock and country music. Shaw is a disc jockey at WQYK-99.5 FM and has been in the country music field for over 25 years.

Other scheduled concerts are:

Sept. 19, Sarasota Slim (blues);

Sept. 26, Tommy G. and HighSeas (variety);

Oct. 3, Patty Sanphy's "All Women's Blues Revue" (rhythm and blues);

Oct. 10, Stacey Knights (contemporary jazz);

and Oct. 17, Another Time (Beatles tribute/oldies/rock 'n' roll).

The Music in the Park series began in 1997 when a group of Seminole residents asked the city if they could organize a concert series.

The first year, the city gave the committee $250 toward the series, with the balance to be raised through sponsorships. Today, the $10,000 cost is covered by the Seminole business community, Sheets said.

The city still provides police security and park set-up/cleanup.

Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on. They can bring picnic suppers or purchase food and beverages at the park. No alcoholic beverages or glass containers are allowed.

If the weather is threatening, people can call the recreation center, 391-8345, after 5 p.m. on the day of the concert for updated information.
