Ex-Gator starts fast for Lions

SAINT LEO - It didn't take long for Casie Poyssick to adjust from high school to college soccer.

The former Land O'Lakes standout, who last season helped lead the Gators to the Class 3A state title, scored seven goals in Saint Leo's first two games and Tuesday was named the Sunshine State Conference player of the week.

"She's tough," Saint Leo coach Tony Paris said.

Poyssick, a 5-foot-3 forward, scored four goals in the season opener, a 6-2 victory Friday against Palm Beach Atlantic. She added three and an assist in Sunday's 8-1 victory against Fontbonne (Mo.).

Poyssick set four school records during the weekend: four goals in one game, eight points in a game, seven goals in consecutive games and 15 points in consecutive games.

Poyssick had 119 goals in four seasons at Land O'Lakes.

"She's actually adjusted very quickly," Land O'Lakes coach Vicky King said. "She can make a difference on that Saint Leo team. I think she'll be an impact player."

Poyssick earned a starting spot, in part, by scoring a goal in a preseason 2-1 victory against South Florida. That marked Saint Leo's first victory, preseason or regular season, against a Division I team.

The Lions' explosive offense almost assures they will surpass last year's 16 goals in 19 games.

Saint Leo (2-0) won three games last season and entered its fourth season 7-52-2.
