We're forced to swallow fluoridation

Published September 3, 2003

If someone wants to put fluoride in their body, let it be their choice, but why should the county limit my choice as a citizen and as a parent to not have fluoride put into my body or my children's bodies? Toothpaste, fluoride rinses, etc., are all topical, and that is the recommended way one should get fluoride, not systemically/internally.

Why should we bow to pressure from political interests? We could use the money that will be spent on fluoridation on education or by buying toothpaste and floss for those at risk of dental caries. Babies under 6 months old should not have fluoridated water, so what will their formula be made with if they are not nursed?

Beach visitors face a turnoff

I recently had occasion to travel from North Redington Beach down to St. Pete Beach and was surprised to see how beach-unfriendly we are, not only to our visitors but to our own residents. There is no longer any free parking along our beaches, so far as I could see.

On St. Pete Beach, I didn't see any parking meters, so I stopped along one of the bridges going over to the beach and, lo and behold, I found a box where you have to put money in to obtain a parking ticket to display in your car window. The parking fees are enforced on both sides of the street seven days a week. On the side streets are signs indicating that you have to have a parking permit sticker in your window to park there. The whole length of the beach had only one or two cars at each bridge access.

Since this was a weekday, I wondered why it was necessary to charge for parking so few cars.

We are so proud of our beautiful beaches, and then we do our best to keep visitors and residents from using them.

I wonder, if I walk or ride my bike to the beach, will somebody figure out a way to charge me for setting my foot on the beach?
