BROOKSVILLE - The family and friends of Thomas P. "Bo" Rakes have established a charitable trust in his name at SunTrust Bank to help defray more than $100,000 in medical bills Rakes has incurred since he was injured in a traffic accident July 6.
Donations may be made at any SunTrust location.
Rakes, 31, of Brooksville suffered brain damage, multiple compound fractures of the left leg, a broken left pelvis, a shattered left elbow, a broken right foot and numerous lacerations after his pickup ran off Croom Road and struck a tree, according to the family. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident, and Rakes was wearing a seat belt, a Hernando County sheriff's report stated.
After the wreck, Rakes was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, where he was a patient until he was transferred to Heron Pointe Health & Rehabilitation in Brooksville. He remains bedridden and is undergoing physical and occupational therapy.
The state-required insurance on Rakes' demolished vehicle went toward paying for the helicopter transport, family members said. Several charities at St. Joseph's have picked up some of his medical expenses, but the family, including his wife, Robin, and her daughter, Brittany Parker, 11, are overwhelmed with the remainder.
It remains unknown how long Rakes will remain in rehabilitation.
Friends have built a wheelchair-accessible ramp to the family's mobile home along Cobb Road. Among the family's likely needs in the future are a wheelchair and a wheelchair-accessible vehicle.
Rakes was employed by Miller's Stucco of Inverness, which has continued to supply him a partial salary, family members said. His wife is office manager for Infinity Homes in Spring Hill and has been working part time since her husband's accident.
