The Florida High School Athletic Association will administer an optional makeup football examination to officials who were accused of cheating at an Aug.25 session.
The 169 officials who took the test at Hillsborough High, some of whom complained about rampant cheating at the site, will have a choice of either taking the test again or keeping their scores from last year. The FHSAA's associate director of athletics, Gary Pigott, said he expects about half the officials to take the makeup exam, which will be held at Hillsborough on Sept.22.
"We basically wanted to keep it fair," Pigott said. "We didn't want to lump them all in together, but we heard enough of an uproar that the test was compromised in some capacity."
Pigott said the fault resided with both the FHSAA, which accidentally sent fewer test booklets than needed, and the officials who appeared to be sharing answers during the exam. The FHSAA will send a representative to help administer the makeup exam.
