Report: daughter okayed decapitation

Published September 7, 2003

NEW YORK - The daughter of Hall of Fame slugger Ted Williams gave the go-ahead to have Williams decapitated, according to the New York Daily News.

According to the newspaper, Williams' daughter Claudia signed off on a form from the Alcor Life Extension Foundation that gave the cryonics firm the legal right to decapitate her father. Williams' body was consigned to the facility by Claudia and son John Henry on July 5, 2002, the day he died of heart disease.

Months later John Henry Williams produced a handwritten will, signed Nov. 2, 2001 (which daughter Bobbi Jo contested in vain), in which Ted Williams purportedly stated his wishes to be put in cryonics suspension with Claudia and John Henry. However, neither John Henry nor Claudia signed to be cryogenically frozen.

JOBS SAFE FOR NOW: Yankees principal owner George Steinbrenner promised not to fire manager Joe Torre, general manager Brian Cashman or Torre's coaches. "Any decisions will come after the season," he said.

MARLINS: Catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who signed a one-year, $10-million deal in January, said he would consider re-signing.

TWINS: Outfielder Shannon Stewart is playing with a sore hamstring and will be evaluated today.

WHITE SOX: Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk joined many of his 1983 teammates in celebrating the 20th anniversary of their 99-win season and division title.
