THIRD-GENERATION BATMAN: Warner Bros. is making another Caped Crusader movie - filming is scheduled to begin in February - and the hunt is on for an actor to play the lead role. But don't expect the return of Adam West or George Clooney. Or Val Kilmer, for that matter.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, expect someone young enough to be West's grandson.

The candidates scheduled to audition include Jake Gyllenhaal, Christian Bale, Joshua Jackson of Dawson's Creek fame, Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later), Henry Cavill (I Capture the Castle) and Eion Bailey, whose HBO movie And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself debuted over the weekend.

Also on the contender list is little-known Hugh Dancy, currently filming King Arthur (he's Galahad). An audition depends on his schedule and, the Hollywood Reporter says, whether he will be allowed to shave his Galahad beard for it.

QUESTION: ARE NO ROMANTIC NOTIONS LEFT? Sting was the poster boy for yoga a few years back when a story circulated that workouts had gotten him into such good shape, he said he could make love to wife Trudie Styler for eight hours at a time.

Wait. Don't drop the paper and start scouring the phone book for the nearest studio.

Sting now says the story was the testosterone-driven product of a night of drinking with singer/Live Aid impresario Bob Geldof.

"I think I mentioned to Bob I could make love for eight hours," Sting tells England's ITV TV network. "What I didn't say was that this included four hours of begging and then dinner and a movie."

ANSWER: NO: John Mayer, the 20-something whose acoustic-based debut album, Room for Squares, got him anointed the sensitive singer-songwriter of his generation, says being a musician really doesn't help his love life. But it's not his fault.

"Thanks Kid Rock. Thank you very much. Because now every girl I want to meet sees the rock star as the guy guzzling the beer with a bunch of hats," Mayer tells MTV.com. "And I don't wear hats, and I don't guzzle beer. I get on the bus. I check e-mail, put on some dry undies and watch Old School again."

Admitting to loving Old School won't help his love life, either.

Mayer's new album, Heavier Things, is out Tuesday.

WAIT UNTIL SHE HEARS HOW THEY MAKE HER LUNGS SOUND: Their rehearsal for MTV's Video Music Awards didn't include their kiss, but it did include some nagging. Madonna didn't like Britney Spears smoking and told her she should give up the habit.

"It was a really funny exchange," Madonna spokeswoman Liz Rosenberg tells London's Daily Mirror. "But Britney said she likes the way cigarettes made her voice sound."
