A textbook that never gets old

By Times Staff Writer
Published September 8, 2003

The St. Petersburg Times is one of more than 900 U.S. newspapers that distribute their products to schools, helping students learn by reading the newspaper.

The newspapers provide educational supplements on a variety of subjects, as well as activities and workshops for educators and families.

In addition to providing suggestions for teachers on how to treat the newspaper as a text that is updated daily, the Times' Newspaper in Education program includes a weekly feature of particular interest to students and teachers published during the school year. This year's series, "We're Talkin' Books Here!" written by language arts teacher Holly Atkins, begins today.

A newly expanded NIE department is led by manager Gretchen Letterman, who has been an editorial writer and lifestyles editor in her 20 years as a Times journalist. In the Newsfeatures department, Letterman directed the X-Team, the students chosen each year to write for Xpress. "Helping kids to learn by reading the newspaper is a lot of fun," Letterman says, "especially when we hear success stories from teachers and parents about the improvements in reading and other subjects they've seen in their children who read the paper."

Also new to the NIE department is education specialist Jill Wilson, an award-winning educator who most recently worked for the University of Central Florida's statewide reading center developing curriculum and providing literacy training to Tampa Bay area school districts; and development specialist Jill Rodgers, who joined the NIE team after serving as director of special events for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Wilson works with teachers using the Times in their classrooms, developing curriculum and conducting workshops. Rodgers coordinates sponsorships from organizations and individuals to provide the Times free to teachers in the Tampa Bay region.
