Ferrero beats U.S. Open champion Roddick in rankings

NEW YORK - U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick rose to a career-best No.2 in the ATP Tour rankings Monday, one place behind losing finalist Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Andre Agassi, who lost to Ferrero in the semifinals, dropped from No.1 to No.4. Wimbledon champion Roger Federer is No.3.
Justine Henin-Hardenne is second in the WTA Tour rankings for the first time after winning the Open women's title, dropping Serena Williams to No.3 - her lowest placing since May 2002.
NHL: Leafs' Gilmour retires
The Maple Leafs' Doug Gilmour retired after 20 seasons. The 40-year-old forward, coming off a knee injury, played for seven teams and won a Stanley Cup with the Flames in 1989. Gilmour had 450 goals and 964 assists.
ROOKIE CAMP: Forward Dustin Johner scored twice as the Lightning (1-2) beat the Thrashers 5-1 in Traverse City, Mich.
RANGERS: Defenseman Brian Leetch is out indefinitely with a left ankle injury similar to the one that caused him to miss nearly half of last season.
GOLF: Senior champ advances
Four-time defending champion Carol Semple Thompson won her opening-round match 4 and 3 at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship in Austin, Texas. It was her 25th consecutive match-play victory in the event.
USGA SENIOR AMATEUR: Medalist Bob Kulp and defending champion Greg Reynolds were eliminated in the opening round of match play in Bristol, Va.
FLORIDA STATE MID-AMATEUR QUALIFYING: Bill Griffith and Brian Sardelich each shot 73 to lead 11 who advanced at the PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens.
COLLEGES: Baylor hires AD
Ian McCaw was hired as athletic director at Baylor, a school shaken by scandal and the murder of one of its basketball players. McCaw left the same job at Massachusetts and earlier ran the athletic departments at Northeastern and Tulane. He replaces Tom Stanton, who resigned last month as the fallout began from the death of Patrick Dennehy.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK: USF cross-country runner Christa Benton of St. Petersburg was honored by Conference USA. The former Keswick Christian standout won her second meet of the season Saturday at the Gator Invitational. ... The SEC chose Florida cross-country runner Steven Hassen and volleyball player Benavia Jenkins. ... Tampa cross-country runners Elias Gonzales and Allison Mascas and volleyball player Ericka Womack were picked by the Sunshine State Conference. It also honored Saint Leo soccer players Casie Poyssick and Maria DeMaio.
BASKETBALL: Penn State senior Jamaal Tate will redshirt this season because of a drinking problem.
SAILING: USF defeated host Eckerd and Florida at the SAISA South Points One Regatta on Sunday on Boca Ciega Bay.
SOCCER: La Salle goalie Stash Graham, who played at Jesuit, had three saves in a 2-1 win over Albany on Sunday.

HORSES: Michael Tabor and John Magnier paid $3.6-million for a Danzig colt, a full brother to Hollywood Derby winner Brahms, at the first day of Keeneland's September yearling sale in Lexington, Ky. ... Harold Rose, who was involved in racing as a trainer, owner and breeder for more than a half century, died at his North Miami home. He was 92. Mr. Rose saddled two starters in the Kentucky Derby: Rexson's Hope in 1984 and Hal's Hope in 2000.
SOCCER: Former USF player Kristine Edner earned a spot on the Norwegian World Cup team.
