COLUMBIA, S.C. - You would think a 2-0 start and a return to the Top 25 might cheer South Carolina coach Lou Holtz. But, if you thought that, you would be wrong.
"We're not laboring under any misconceptions that we think we're an excellent football team," said Holtz, his typical, dour, Monday self.
Excellent might be a stretch this early. But the 25th-ranked Gamecocks showed promise as they surprised then-No. 15 Virginia 31-7 and entered the national polls for the first time in more than a year.
"I didn't know we were in the rankings," Holtz said, looking to the school's sports information director Kerry Tharp for confirmation. "In where?"
Told the school made the Associated Press rankings, Holtz said, "That's the writers?" and rolled his eyes to big laughs.
"I wouldn't say a whole lot about that in honesty unless they're not going to vote again," he said, continuing his routine. "Are they going to vote again? If they're going to vote again, then it's not relevant."
