TAMPA - A husband and wife tried to overdose on drugs in a South Tampa motel room Tuesday, police said.
Employees at the Econolodge at 1020 S Dale Mabry Highway called police when the couple in Room 126 refused to open the door.
A Tampa police officer helped break down the door and found Christina and Garth Darrach near death, according to a police report.
The couple had taken illicit drugs in a suicide attempt, police said. They both left notes saying they were distraught that they were unable to regain custody of their children.
The notes said the couple had recently traveled to West Virginia, where the children are in the custody of their grandparents.
Econolodge employees said the couple stayed at the motel for one night.
Garth and Christina Darrach were taken to Tampa General Hospital, where they were in "critical, life-threatening condition," a police spokeswoman said.
Garth Darrach, 36, and Christina Darrach, 30, live in Tampa, police said.
