STEVE THOMPSONA deputy who was called to the store said he found a man outside who said, "I was trying to steal DVDs from Blockbuster."
A man tried to steal hundreds of dollars' worth of DVDs from a Blockbuster store at State Road 54 and Rowan Road, authorities said.
Here is the story, according to a Pasco County sheriff's report:
Terrill Lance Milam, 32, of 6536 Kentucky Ave. in New Port Richey walked into the Blockbuster store Tuesday night with a couple of garbage bags that had reportedly been stolen from a nearby Kash n' Karry. He was dressed in blue jean shorts, new white sneakers and a white T-shirt.
As the video store's security cameras rolled, he loaded the bags with $386.63 worth of DVDs, the report said.
A store clerk became suspicious. At one point the clerk noticed that a shelf that had contained three Sleeping Beauty DVDs contained only one. He called authorities.
It is unclear from the report just when Milam may have become aware that the clerk was suspicious. But the report does say that when he left the store, he left behind the bags full of movies.
A sheriff's deputy soon arrived and found him about 25 feet from the store.
"I asked Terrill if I could have a moment of his time to get some information from him," the deputy reported.
Milam agreed. He told the deputy, "I know why you're here. I was trying to steal DVDs from Blockbuster." He then gave the deputy his ID card.
The same deputy also found what appeared to be a getaway car: a maroon Chevrolet Cavalier, its license plate covered with a white rag.
After being read his rights, Milam told the deputy that a charge of grand theft "would not fly" because he didn't leave the store with the movies.
Facing a charge of grand theft, he is being held in the county jail without bail.
One of the car's passengers was Milam's sister, Sunny Rene Lynn, 25, of 10525 Helena St. in New Port Richey.
Asked why the car's tag was covered, she explained that her brother was in the process of stealing DVDs from Blockbuster. Lynn's son, whose name the Times is withholding because of his age, also was in the car. Lynn told the deputy that her brother planned to pawn the DVDs for cash.
She had tried to hide a black nylon bag containing trace amounts of crack cocaine under the car, the report said, but the deputy found it. Lynn faces a charge of cocaine possession and was released from the county jail without having to post bail.
Driving the car was Jamie Bodwell, 22, of 15636 Country Lane in Spring Hill. She told the deputy that she was unaware of the plot and was driving the car only because her friend Lynn was feeling ill.
Bodwell faces a charge of grand theft and was being held Wednesday in the county jail in lieu of $5,000.
Bodwell and Milam have lengthy arrest histories that include larceny and burglary charges, state records show.
After the arrest, deputies gave the store back the movies: Kangaroo Jack, Ghost Ship, XXX, The Hours, Kate & Leopold, A Guy Thing, Jackass and Jackass II.
