NEW PORT RICHEY - The musical Annie was the big winner in the second annual "Tommy Awards" given out by Richey Suncoast Theatre on Thursday.
The Tommys are Richey Suncoast's version of Broadway's Tony Awards.
Annie won 12 of the 18 categories, including favorite male and female leads, favorite director and the coveted favorite show award.
The Tommys are named for silent film star Thomas Meighan, who built the movie theater that eventually became Richey Suncoast Theatre.
Tommy Award winners are chosen by members of the audiences at Richey Suncoast shows. A ballot is included in each program, and the winners are graded in each show on a scale of one to five. The person and show with the highest number of points for one show is the winner.
Other Tommy winners were the comedy Don't Dress for Dinner, with three; the murder mystery Ladies in Retirement, with two; and the musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress, with one. The musical Gypsy was the only show not to win an award.
