ATLANTA - Bobby Abreu had three hits and Chase Utley homered - all in the first three innings - as the Philadelphia Phillies denied Greg Maddux his 15th win with an 8-3 victory over the Braves on Thursday night.
Philadelphia pulled within a half-game of idle Florida in the wild-card race. Marlon Byrd finished 3-for-5, and Pat Burrell had two hits and two RBIs.
Brett Myers shut down the Braves for seven innings, allowing seven hits, including a two-run homer to pinch-hitter Matt Franco in the fifth. Myers won his third straight decision.
Gary Sheffield went 3-for-4 and Marcus Giles doubled twice, tying the modern franchise record with 47 this season.
Maddux (14-11) has won at least 15 games for 15 straight seasons, tied with Cy Young for the longest streak. His next win gives him the record, but the Phillies postponed any celebration until at least Maddux's next start, which is scheduled to come Tuesday in Montreal.
He left after 32/3 innings and allowed seven runs on 12 hits, his second-shortest outing of the season. He lasted two innings against the Marlins on April 5.
"I felt good, probably the best I've felt in a month," Maddux said. "I thought I made some good pitches that I gave up singles on, and I made some bad pitches that I gave up doubles and home runs."
PADRES 5, GIANTS 4 (10): Keith Lockhart's pinch-hit, two-run single with the bases loaded to lead host San Diego.
Lockhart's hit off Tim Worrell helped the Padres avoid a three-game sweep against the West-leading Giants.
J.T. Snow homered in the top of the inning to give San Francisco a 4-3 lead. Snow hit a 2-2 pitch off Rod Beck for his seventh home run. Mike Matthews got the final out for the win.
BREWERS 5, ASTROS 3: Ben Sheets once again beat Houston as Milwaukee stopped a six-game losing streak.
Houston had won three in a row and six of seven. The Astros finished 7-3 on their road trip.
Sheets (11-12) matched his career high for wins and defeated the Astros for the sixth straight time. EXPOS 3, CUBS 2: Tomo Ohka took a two-hit shutout into the ninth and Orlando Cabrera hit two doubles and a triple as Montreal survived.
The Expos finished 13-9 at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan.
With the bases loaded and none out in the Cubs ninth, Eric Karros had a run-scoring single, Alex Gonzalez grounded into a double play as another run scored and pinch-hitter Randall Simon grounded out.
ROCKIES 9, CARDINALS 4: Sterling Hitchcock struggled for the first time since joining St. Louis, surrendering four homers in 31/3 innings.
Colorado is an NL-worst 17-33 since the All-Star break and has won two of its past 11. But the Rockies took two of three from St. Louis for their fourth road series victory in 24 tries.
D'BACKS 2, DODGERS 0: Chris Capuano allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings while starting in place of Curt Schilling. The 25-year-old left-hander struck out four, walked none and hit a batter in his fourth major-league start. Schilling has a sore neck.
Jose Valverde allowed one hit in the eighth, and Matt Mantei pitched a perfect ninth as visiting Los Angeles was held to four hits.
Third baseman Adrian Beltre's throwing error set up two unearned runs against Odalis Perez in the seventh.
REDS 3, PIRATES 2: D'Angelo Jimenez hit a three-run homer in the sixth to give host Cincinnati a split of the four-game series. Pittsburgh starter Jeff D'Amico, from Northeast, lost for the fourth time in his past five decisions.
"I was cruising right along," D'Amico said. "I had good stuff. I hadn't given up too many hits. That obviously made it more frustrating."
