KIDS FIRST: The Hernando County Sheriff's Office and Brooksville Kiwanis Club will sponsor Kids Fun Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Tom Varn Park, off Darby Lane in Brooksville. Displays will include the DARE vehicle, a helicopter, the marine unit Waverunner, the Community Oriented Police Problem Solving four-wheeler, a traffic unit motorcycle, members of the SWAT team, forensics and a K-9 demonstration. Games, prizes, hotdogs and sodas will be available. Admission is free.

BREAKING AWAY: Over the River and Through the Woods, a comedy, continues weekends through Sept. 28 at Stage West Community Playhouse, 8390 Forest Oaks Blvd., Spring Hill. Shows are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 2 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $14. The theater's box office is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and one hour before each show. Call 683-5113.

SNAPSHOT OF THE PAST: "Ground Zero," an exhibit of photographs taken by Alex Contreras in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, closes today at the Alfred McKethan Library on the Pasco-Hernando Community College North Campus, 11415 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Brooksville. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

ALL THAT JAZZ: The Hernando Jazz Society will have an open jam session from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the SNPJ Hall, 13383 County Line Road, Spring Hill (3 miles east of Mariner Boulevard). Admission is $5 for nonmembers. Light refreshments will be available.

HOMETOWN ART: Paintings, artwork, quilts, photographs, ceramics and poetry are on display during business hours at the Brooksville City Hall Art Gallery, 201 Howell Ave., downtown Brooksville. The exhibit is free. Call 544-5400.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: The work of Spring Hill Art League artist of the month Nina Ketcham will be on display through September during business hours at the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative, 10005 Cortez Blvd. in Spring Hill. The exhibit is free. For information, call 596-4000.

BOYS FROM THE 'HOOD: The Brooklyn Reunion show will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Center for the Arts at River Ridge, 11646 Town Center Road, New Port Richey. The show stars Kenny Vance (Cara Mia, This Magic Moment, Walking in the Rain) and the Planotones; Jay Siegel and the Tokens (The Lion Sleeps Tonight); and the Crests featuring Tommy Mara. LOOK AHEAD

GOING TO THE DOGS: The Klassis K-9's 4-H Dog Club will sponsor its first open dog show Sept. 27 at the Hernando County Fairgrounds on U.S. 41 just south of Brooksville. The event is open to youth ages 8 to 18. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and judging starts at 9. Beginning and advanced classes will be held in showmanship, obedience and agility. Classes are $4 for the initial class and $3 for each class thereafter. Participants must register by Saturday. Call 796-7531.
