ST. PETERSBURG - Milton B. Beckerman, a retired media broker and former business writer and editor for the St. Petersburg Times, has died at 86.
Mr. Beckerman, who owned weekly newspapers in Georgia and Louisiana, died Thursday (Sept. 11, 2003) at his Madeira Beach home. He had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, his family said.
In 1959, he joined the Times and wrote the daily "Business Beat" column. After four years, he left the paper to handle public relations for Bernard Greenbaum & Associates, a general contracting company.
He was a real estate agent for the 300 Building complex and vice president for EBS Tax Services.
In 1996, he retired as owner of Beckerman Associates Inc., a media brokerage that specialized in selling newspapers and shoppers.
Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he attended New York University and St. Petersburg Junior College.
He came here from Natchitoches, La.
He was a past president of the Tampa Bay Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and the West Coast Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the professional journalism fraternity. He was a former member of the Florida Philharmonic Society.
His wife of 62 years, Bernice, died in 1999. Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Devey Smith and Susan Koza; a son, Jay; and five grandchildren A private funeral will be today with a memorial service later. Lewis W. Mohn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Seminole, is in charge.
