Shark bite victim, 18, recovering in hospital

DAYTONA BEACH - A college student remained hospitalized Sunday, a day after he was bitten by a shark in the Atlantic Ocean near Daytona Beach.

Aaron Edelson, 18, is continuing to recover from surgery at Halifax Medical Center, hospital officials said. The freshman at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University suffered severe injuries to his left calf when he was attacked Saturday afternoon.

It was the 10th bite reported in Volusia County this year.

Another possible shark bite was reported farther south in Martin County on Sunday, when a young girl was attacked while swimming at a Stuart beach.

The girl, whom officials said was between the ages of 8 and 10, suffered thigh wounds after being bitten by something in the water. Officials said a shark attack was unlikely, but were not certain what caused the girl's injuries.

"If it had been a shark, I think the wounds would've been more laid open," Martin County lifeguard Sam Mahoney told the Stuart News for today's edition. "There wasn't a large loss of blood."

The beach remained open because no sharks were seen in the area, Mahoney said.
