My obsession with that greatest of culinary traditions, the all-American diner, continues to be satisfied with this wonderful site. It is a spyglass on the current state of the diner and provides museum-like features, such as a history, culture and social implications. While I'm not really thinking about buying a diner, it's good to know that they even have them for sale.
I'm puzzled if one should only half rejoice when finding a pseudo dictionary. Regardless, devotees of Ambrose Bierce's famous Devil's Dictionary will be more than satisfied with the 16,000 or so made-up words in this collection. If you've got nothing better to do, just click on the Randomize button for a few giggles.
There are all kinds of data on how much advertising we consume daily. If you look at how popular antiadvertising devices such as the TiVo digital video recorder are, and how evangelistic the owners are, it's fairly safe to say we're sick of having advertising crammed down our throats. But is there more at play than advertising just being an annoyance? While I don't agree with all that's in this lively essay, it did spark some new thoughts on the subject. Maybe it will do the same for you.
Jen Segrest has an obsession bordering on the insane that revolves around snow domes. It's those little water-filled globes that come from places such as Hawaii and feature a plastic beach scene and something as unlikely as snow when shaken. How could you not be enchanted by such a thing? I was surprised by some items in the collection. They're actually quite gorgeous and - dare I say it? - tasteful. Don't worry, there's plenty of other wonderfully tacky ones to feed your eyeballs.
What do you know about Harlem? I had an idea that it was a jazz hotbed at some point but knew very little else until recently. Being a wildly visual person, I was lured in by the photography on this site. But, once hooked, I read about the history and the people that were an integral part of this famous location. It'll take you through 1940, and the site looks like a work in progress. Make note of the home page, as the navigation isn't what it could be. But the information is worth the effort.
