Pinellas County will receive a $940,000 federal grant to fight diabetes, asthma and obesity, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday.
Pinellas is one of 12 communities receiving a total of $13.7-million as part of the department's new Steps to a HealthierUS program.
The county health department will lead the five-year project, with help from a consortium of local governments, hospitals and nonprofit groups.
Pinellas will use the money in St. Petersburg, Pinellas Park, Gulfport and Kenneth City to develop educational campaigns and other programs. The programs will focus on physical exercise, better nutrition and smoking cessation.
