WEEKI WACHEE - As part of their ongoing effort to stay afloat, the mermaids of Weeki Wachee Springs will sponsor a car show and concert today to benefit the park's "Save Our Tails" campaign.

Riding the crest of a national media blitz, Weeki Wachee Springs has devised a plan to raise money for the ailing roadside tourist attraction.

"The best way for us to go about saving our park is to stay positive," said Monica Anderson, the event's organizer. "Giving people a way to come out and support us goes a long way toward our cause."

Famous for underwater mermaid shows that have been staged since 1947, Weeki Wachee employees have taken it upon themselves in recent months to try to turn things around.

Open to the public, the car show will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the attraction's parking lot. Entering a car into the show will require a $5 donation to the restoration project.

"Little things like this will hopefully keep us in people's minds," said Anderson. "And they can have a lot of fun along the way."

Trophies and prizes will be awarded for various categories in the car show.

Music will be provided by a DJ, and Ken Watson will make an appearance paying tribute to Elvis. Mermaids will be on hand and available for photos.

The car show will be followed by an 8 p.m. concert by the Spring Hill band Clenchfist and other guest artists in the amphitheater. Ticket prices for the concert are $7 for ages 16 to 21 and $5 for 21 and older. Clenchfist will perform a second concert at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Weeki Wachee Amphitheater.

Weeki Wachee Springs is at 6131 Commercial Way, at U.S. 19 and State Road 50, in Weeki Wachee.
