Published September 19, 2003

DELAWARE, Ohio - David Miller refused to lose the Little Brown Jug. He guided No Pan Intended to a wire-to-wire win Thursday, leaving the duo a victory short of pacing's Triple Crown.

No Pan Intended drew the No.1 post in the final and held the rail until the last turn, when Hall of Fame driver John Campbell and Armbro Animate made a push on the inside. But No Pan Intended, a 2-1 favorite, never lost the lead in a 1:53 performance that was a length better than Make It Brief, driven by Ron Pierce, and Armbro Animate.

"It's very hard to keep my composure," Miller, an Ohio native, said after his first Little Brown Jug victory. "I had no intention of letting anybody go."

With a victory in the Messenger Stakes on Oct.18, Miller and No Pan Intended would be the first Triple Crown winners since Pierce and Blissful Hall in 1999.

Miller won 10 races on the card, breaking his Delaware County Fairgrounds record of seven set on Sept. 14, 1997.

Armbro Animate, the Meadowlands Pace runner-up, won the first elimination. No Pan Intended cruised in the second elimination. Pronger, named for Chris Pronger of the NHL's St. Louis Blues, won the third elimination and was fifth in the final of the 58th running of the $605,050 Little Brown Jug.

CALDER: Apprentice jockey Emanuel Cosme, 24, rode in his first race - and won. Cosme won in the second race aboard Gypsy Dot, who paid $15.60.

COLLEGES: USF gets commitment

Collin Dennis, a guard at Richland High School in North Richland Hills, Texas, orally committed to South Florida.

Dennis, 6 feet 2, 180 pounds, plays point guard and shooting guard.

"I liked the coach (Robert McCullum) during the home visit last week, and they had the most talent of the teams recruiting me," said Dennis, who also considered Wichita State, Arkansas-Little Rock and North Carolina-Wilmington. "I haven't been to Tampa yet, but I've heard really good things about it and my favorite (sports) team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers."

Last season Dennis helped Richland to a 24-11 record, averaging 24 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Richland coach Richard Bacon said Dennis is his first four-year starter in 24 years of coaching, and he is projected to qualify academically.

Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first signing period is in November.

VOLLEYBALL: Eckerd sophomore Brittany Kauss was selected the Sunshine State Conference player of the week after leading the Tritons (9-2) to a 3-0 mark. She averaged 4.67 kills, 2.89 digs and 1.44 service aces.

Italy's Alessandro Petacchi won the 12th stage of the Tour of Spain, but Isidro Nozal of Spain kept the overall lead. Petacchi edged ahead of the pack in a final sprint in Albacete to take the 104-mile stage in 3 hours, 41 minutes, 49 seconds. Germany's Erik Zabel took second, and American Fred Rodriguez was third.

BASKETBALL: Arrest in Bryant case

Authorities arrested a Swiss bodybuilding coach they said made a $3-million offer to kill the woman who has accused Lakers guard Kobe Bryant of sexual assault. Patrick Graber was arrested in Monterey Park, Calif., for investigation of soliciting a murder after making the offer to Bryant's security director then meeting with undercover detectives, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said. Baca said Graber, 31, of El Segundo agreed to carry out the murder for $1-million up front and $2-million after the fact.

PACERS: Indiana will sign point guard Kenny Anderson today to be a backup to Jamaal Tinsley, the team said on its Web site.

SONICS: Jack Sikma, a seven-time All-Star who helped Seattle win the 1979 NBA title, joined the team as special assignments coach.

SAILING: Alinghi ties Moet

In a tight race that featured two lead changes and a penalty, America's Cup champ Alinghi of Switzerland beat San Francisco-based Oracle BMW Racing in San Francisco Bay to even the best-of-seven Moet Cup at 2. Organizers and both teams decided to toss out Oracle's victory in Race 4 on Wednesday because a fishing boat steamed through the starting box, costing the Swiss boat controlling position. Instead of going into Thursday's race with a 3-1 lead, Oracle, headed by software tycoon Larry Ellison, led just 2-1. The Moet Cup is a rematch of the America's Cup challenger final off Auckland, New Zealand, in January, which Alinghi won 5-1.
