The Times offers candidates not recommended by its editorial board an opportunity to reply. Here are replies in the St. Petersburg City Council race.
I appreciate the Times' conclusion that I am a "likable guy." I take exception, however, that my stands on the issues were virtually ignored. My platform is definitive. It includes: economic enrichment, protecting our waterfront from overdevelopment, improving city services, revitalizing the port, preserving the airport and, most importantly, public safety. Times' columnist Bill Maxwell expressed a similar concern for public safety in a recent article (Sept. 10).
The Times also reported that I have not had time for civic involvement. I have not belonged to traditional civic organizations because they meet while I am in class, but as a teacher, coach and mentor for 35 years, I have been directly involved in the development of the citizenry of our community. I also support the charities these organizations work toward, and have volunteered my time to assist with those endeavors. These organizations contribute a great deal to the community, but it would be naive to deny that members join also for the economic networking they provide.
I have not gotten rich as a teacher, yet I believe that it is not the income of a profession that determines its worth. My time as a teacher has enabled me to understand the interests of all our citizens.
Your editorial ignored my stand on the issues. I understand that an editorial is just that, but I believe the Times should have used its influence to educate the voters on the issues, not simply to perpetuate its own agenda.
For the past five years, it has been my honor to serve you on the City Council. I have worked hard to unite this city, and have built bridges with people, neighborhoods and business, balancing the needs of all while considering the uniqueness of St. Petersburg.
We have advanced economic development more in the past five years than any other time in our history, and I am proud to have led the efforts to preserve and restore Sunken Gardens. Just look at the revival of Fourth Street and downtown with BayWalk and the addition of hundreds of new residences and businesses.
When I began, your millage rate was more than 7.7 - now it is down to 7.09. While being a good steward of your tax dollars, we were still able to make major improvements to our infrastructure and neighborhoods. I am most pleased by our enhancements in public safety where now our police officers and firefighters have all tools necessary to safely do their jobs with confidence and support from City Hall. Foundations are laid for the redevelopment of Midtown, and I am committed to seeing our investments pay off with jobs, retail services and quality affordable housing.
My vision for the future is clear because I have been listening to you. You have told me that preservation of the waterfront is important, and that public safety is paramount. You desire affordable services and activities which enhance your lives. In today's political climate, you have told me that character counts, and that values do matter.
I am committed to advancing your quality of life, and have the experience, understanding and know-how to accomplish this task. I would appreciate your continued support to ensure our success.
