Saturday market will reopen Oct. 4

ST. PETERSBURG - The Saturday Morning Market will return to downtown Oct. 4.

It closed in May as summer arrived, when the heat made it too uncomfortable for the outdoor venue, even from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Organizers said then that it would reopen in the fall.

The market now will be on Central Avenue between First and Second streets, a new location with more room. It will have the same hours.

The market started slowly in the fall but had built up to about 40 vendors by the time it closed in the spring. Organizer Gail Eggeman said the market expects to open with about 50 vendors because of the additional room.

Like last year, the market's main draw will be fresh produce, baked goods and plants, Eggeman said. Also for sale will be pottery, jewelry, housewares and gifts.

The market was organized by volunteers hoping to establish a community focal point and a sales center.

"We are about community and creativity," Eggeman said.

A.G. Edwards moving downtown

ST. PETERSBURG - A.G. Edwards & Sons Inc. is leaving its home of 34 years and moving closer to downtown.

The St. Petersburg office of the national brokerage will open at 700 Central Ave. on Oct. 6.

"It is a real big move for us," branch manager Arthur J. Zelenak said.

In its new location, Edwards will have first-floor space with ample, on-site parking. Zelenak said that is important to the firm's older clients.

Zelenak said the firm is too hidden at its longtime location at 3170 Third Ave. N.

"People just don't know us," he said, adding that the present location also is very old.

The firm will put its logo on the exterior of the building at the new location, he said. And with more space, Zelenak said, he would like to increase the work force from 33 to 50.

Day spa coming to BayWalk

ST. PETERSBURG - The parking garage by BayWalk is getting a day spa.

Tranquility Day Spa, 149 Second St. N, is scheduled to open during the first week of November, said Robin Miller-Grabowski, who owns the spa with her husband, Douglas R. Grabowski Jr.

Miller-Grabowski said the full-service spa will offer massages and skin, body and nail care. It will concentrate on well being. Tranquility will have services for women, men, teens and prenatal and postoperative patients.

The Mid Core Garage was built to complement BayWalk, a downtown entertainment/retail center. Retailers in the garage's street-level shops include Starbucks, Atlanta Bread Company, Lynn's Hallmark, BayWalk Pharmacy, Price Hoffman Stone & Associates, the Optic Shop, TCBY/Mrs. Fields Cookies and Century 21 Sunshine Realty.
