State Rep. Heather Fiorentino, R-New Port Richey, prefiled a bill this week for the spring legislative session to rename a section of U.S. 301 in memory of slain sheriff's Lt. Charles "Bo" Harrison.
Fiorentino's bill was filed with the state Tuesday afternoon.
The bill calls for the state Department of Transportation to rename a section of road the Capt. Charles "Bo" Harrison Memorial Highway and erect signs along the route. It does not specify where or how big the section should be.
Harrison, 57, served the Pasco County Sheriff's Office for more than 30 years. He was promoted posthumously to captain.
Harrison was less than two weeks from retirement when he was ambushed June 1 in a sniper attack as he sat in his cruiser on surveillance duty outside a Trilacoochee nightclub.
Alfredie Steele Jr., 19, of Lacoochee was arrested two days later and charged with first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty and is held at a Sumter County Jail awaiting a scheduled trial Nov. 3.
Man accused of pointing pistol at boys at crash scene
PORT RICHEY - A 47-year-old Tarpon Springs man was arrested Monday evening after four boys ages 11 to 14 accused him of pointing a pistol at them, the Pasco Sheriff's Office reported.
The incident happened after an automobile crash at Ridge Road and Sterling Lane, the report said. Paul Alan Peterson happened onto the scene with a woman, who he said is a friend of his. While he was talking with a crash victim, the boys began talking with his friend, who became upset, Peterson told a deputy. He told the boys to leave her alone, he said.
"If you are messing with her, you are messing with me," the boys said he told them as he pointed a gun at them.
Peterson of 1204 East Tarpon Ave., at first denied having a weapon, but then told a deputy he had a handgun in his pocket, the report said. The deputy found a small, black .22-caliber pistol in his pocket.
Peterson was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a concealed firearm. He was held Wednesday in the county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
