NEW PORT RICHEY - A 33-year-old man was hit by a car and dragged about 50 feet across the pavement along Madison Street near State Road 54 on Thursday night, the Sheriff's Office reported.
Several witnesses said he had been wandering the street with a tire iron and approached their cars as they drove past him. One witness said he was on his hands and knees barking and growling at her.
Witnesses said that a white car turned off its lights, aimed at the man and accelerated toward him as he was sitting in the middle of the road. Then it sped away.
The man, Matthew Kent Taylor of 4213 Raccoon Loop, was flown by helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg. A nurse there said he was in stable condition with a broken pelvis early Friday morning, according to the report.
Neither the car that hit him nor its driver had been found as of Friday afternoon, according to a spokesman for the Sheriff's Office.
