A money magazine, but not a moneymaker

An Orlando company is targeting military families with a new personal finance magazine, Military Money. It will be distributed free through commissaries and family counseling centers at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa and dozens of other bases around the country.

The quarterly publication is part of a Department of Defense "financial readiness campaign" aimed at reducing stress created by bad financial habits. Its premier issue includes articles about managing money, buying life insurance, finding safe rental housing, understanding credit card terms and teaching children about money. The information is also available on a Web site (www.militarymoney.com)

InCharge Institute of America, a nonprofit specializing in financial education and credit counseling, is selling advertising for the magazine but said the venture won't be a moneymaker.

Circulation is expected to be about 100,000 for the first issue, which is a slim 16 pages. Both the U.S. circulation and the page count will double for the second issue in November, executive editor Rebecca Stiehl said. She said an additional 40,000 copies will be inserted in the Stars and Stripes newspaper's European edition.
